Theoretically, you can use any actioncam as a helmet camera. Here, too, the decisive factor is for which use you need the helmet camera.
There are here the most different possibilities, where one can fasten the Actioncam at the helmet. On the one hand, the helmet itself determines where you can attach the actioncam, but on the other hand, you can also consciously influence the angle of view of the camera with it.
Many manufacturers also include a large accessory package with the camera. Since this does not always fit with existing helmets, etc., there are fortunately a lot of accessories where you can attach your Actioncam then safely to the helmet. It is important that you check whether the attachments also fit the camera. Many manufacturers offer directly a mounting according to GoPro standard, because there are the most accessories for it.
Advantages and disadvantages of the mounting positions on the helmet
There are three main positions on the helmet where you can mount an action cam.
- On the helmet
- On the side of the helmet (right/left)
- On the chin guard
Each mounting position has advantages and disadvantages. This concerns not only the expected quality of the video, but also possible risks of injury in the event of a fall. Because one thing is clear, on a downhill run you can also fall from time to time. Therefore, there should not be any additional danger due to the actioncam.
The position at the chin guard comes of course only with the appropriate helmet types like full-face helmets into question. For all other helmets, only fastening on the helmet and on the side of the helmet is possible. With some helmet mounts*, you can also be the position of the camera further forward.
Conclusion
Each helmet mounting position has its raison d’être. However, if there is an increased risk of falling, you should rather do without positions 2 and 3, as an injury can be much more severe if you fall on the actioncam.
Alternatively, you can use mounts where the camera is worn on the body with a chest strap*, for example. Or you mount* the actioncam directly on the sports equipment, e.g. on the bicycle or motorcycle handlebars. If the videos look very jerky, then a wearable gimbal is one way to counteract that. However, it also makes the whole setup a bit bigger.
